Top jocks clash at Fairview

- Herald Racing Editor

FRIDAY the 13th is considered by many to be an unlucky day but jockeys Gavin Lerena and Greg Cheyne can bring some smiles to the Fairview Polytrack punters tomorrow.

S’manga Khumalo is also set to do his bit as he also has a few strong rides.

Lerena and Cheyne can start the day on a winning note when they ride Battersea Bridge and Varonella respectively in Race 1 in what should be a great tussle between trainer Jacques Strydom (Battersea Bridge) and Alan Greeff. Lerena could also start as favourite in Race 3 when he rides Dance In The Woods for the Strydom yard, while Cheyne can once again be his biggest danger on Seattle Burning.

Khumalo will be hard to beat on The Stones in Race 5 when he rides the son of Dynasty for the Tara Laing stable.

Khumalo is also the one to watch in Race 6 when he rides another Laing charge, Captain’s Vista. Here Lerena is a big danger on Off To Gaul.

Cheyne has a massive chance on Without Permission in Race 7 while Lerena is not out of it on Captain Disko. In this event Khumalo rides Lessflashmorecash, who is still without a win after 39 races.

However, in his last race Lessflashmorecash only finished 1,25 lengths behind Lord Katawa and it is quite significant that Khumalo gets the ride. This is a clear indication that punters should watch the betting.

Lerena is set for another win in Race 8 when he is aboard Star Burst Galaxy, but Cheyne on O Tamara is also a quality runner.

Race 8 is the main event of the day, the Aloe Handicap over 1300m with stakes of R100 000. Here Lerena and Cheyne can be tested by Leopard Orchid, Victoria College and Harakiri.

Racing starts at 1210 with a Maiden Plate for all maidens over 1 000m and the meeting concludes at 1645 with a Handicap for fillies and mares over 1 300m.
