Cosmos hold off Madibaz

- Mogan Segadavan

NMMU Madibaz got their new year campaign in the Safa-NMB SAB League off to a disappointing start at the Walmer High School on Saturday when they were held to a goalless draw by tailenders Young Cosmos.

The log leaders created a number of goal-scoring opportunities but found a determined Cosmos hard to crack and were not helped by a disallowed goal.

“It seems the boys left their shooting boots at home when they returned from the varsity holidays,” NMMU manager for sport, Mark Tommy, said.

Despite the defeat, Madibaz retain their position at the top of the log.

A rusty Fairview Rovers fought back from 2-0 down but failed to salvage a point, going down 2-1 to Golden Aces.

After Megan August pulled one back midway in the second-half, Rovers stepped up a gear, but only have themselves to blame for not salvaging a draw, when they squandered a last-minute penalty.

Hearts failed to continue from where they left off last week losing 1-0 to Royal Bucks, who led at half time.

The second half was more evenly matched with both teams missing chances in a physical game.

Motherwell Academy failed to find last week’s form when they beat Ikamva Movers and lost 1-0 to Island City.

PE Sundowns 4 Despatch Pioneers 2, Fairview Rovers 1 Golden Aces 2, Central Acemates 4 Ikamva Movers 0, Motherwell Academy 0 Island City 1, Royal Bucks 1 Hearts 0, Young Cosmos 0 NMMU Madibaz 0.
