Bay still in festive mode

Cultural, traditional events enjoyed

HAPPY Friday darlings, it’s me again, your favourite umgosi. Yes, your Skinnerbek is bringing you the low-down dirty details from this past week. To kick-start my weekend last Friday afternoon, I headed to the opening of the Chippa United merchandise store at the Boardwalk, opposite Bargain Books.

It thankfully started on time and Chippa fans came out in their numbers, geared up in their Chippa United regalia and singing soccer songs.

It didn’t look like the entire squad of players managed to make it to the launch – maybe some of them were not back from their breaks yet. But those who were there were happy enough to pose for selfies with their adoring fans.

An embarrassing moment came when our deputy mayor Mongameli Bobani tried to join in the dancing. Whoo shem, he looked like a fish out of water with his awkward dance moves – there’s nothing worse than trying too hard to look current.

Coach Dan “Dance” Malesela said he’d buy four items from the shop because he was not a victim of ‘Jan-u-worry’ and dared others to join him. Some people have money, neh! Me, on the other hand, I just looked away because pay day was still weeks away, though I did spot some items I might put my money on.

Last Saturday one of my gossipgathering minions was one of the many guests at musician Vusi Nova’s traditional ceremony at his family home in KwaDwesi.

Vusi gave thanks to his ancestors by slaughtering a cow in a ceremony called Umbulelo. Sjoe, my colleague has never seen so many people gather for that type of ceremony. Even the great chief himself was there, and by that I mean Chief Ngqoko who owns one of the hottest clubs in Nelson Mandela Bay.

It looks like the ceremony paid off for the muso because just three days later he was nominated for three Metro FM Awards for the 16th instalment of the awards coming up next month. We are crossing fingers for you, brother.

If you weren’t privileged enough to have been invited to Vusi’s, don’t feel bad because you can watch virtually the entire ceremony on his Facebook page, where he posted some clips afterwards.

Earlier this week the Asian community in the Bay celebrated Chinese New Year by hosting a gala evening at the Boardwalk featuring all things authentically Chinese. Again our deputy mayor was out and about. It seems like this dude does not want to miss out on a party, neh?

Until next time darlings, ciao for now!
