Karting just became cheaper for PE fans

-

HAVE you ever dreamt of taking part in a motorsport event but could not afford it? Well, there’s good news.

Local multi-motorsport champion Michael Stephen and the Algoa Kart Club are introducing a new way of helping those with a limited budget to get started.

The new Four-Stroke Karting Series in Port Elizabeth, aimed at adults, will focus on reducing costs and offering fun for the whole family, friends and corporates.

The race format will initially consist of a practise and qualifying session, with two 45-minute endurance races on the day.

The races will include three compulsory pit stops/driver changes, thus allowing four competitors per kart to take part in one race.

A minimum of two drivers per kart is required and there will be a minimum weight for the driver/kart.

With two to four drivers able to take part, the costs for the kart, entry and so on can be split, making it more affordable to get involved.

The races will take place after a normal kart race day, with prize-giving after the event in the clubhouse.

With a complete engine package (engine, exhaust system, clutch, sprockets, chain, fuel pump etc) costing R7 995, split four ways it becomes really affordable.

The idea is to purchase a secondhand chassis, put a four-stroke engine on and go racing!

The complete package can vary anywhere between R15 000 and R25 000, again split four ways.

The running costs for race meetings will include about eight litres of fuel, plus the entry fee and tyre costs.

The tyres will initially be Mojos, with many second-hand tyres available from normal karting. There will be a limit on the number of new tyres for the season, preventing chequebook racing.

Teams will also be required to join the club, preventing individuals from having to take out a full club membership. Club membership will enable team members to utilise the club and practise facilities.

Michael Stephen Racing and the club will also offer limited karts for rent on a first-come first-serve basis.
