Politicians vie for glamour awards
SOUTH African politicians will be lauded and awarded for doing what they were elected to do – their jobs.
Even the Eastern Cape made the cut, with some political figures who hail from the province pitted against fellow MPs, MPLs and premiers.
They include UDM leader Bantu Holomisa, who is up for the best parliamentarian and politician of the year awards, with Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas and ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe going head to head for the Citizen’s Choice award.
UDM MP Nqabayomzi Kwankwa was nominated in the debater of the year and citizen’s choice categories, while Rural Development and Agrarian Reform MEC Mlibo Qoboshiyane will be competing for politician of the year and bestdressed male politician.
Premier Phumulo Masualle was nominated for the best premier award and Deputy Communications Minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams will be vying for the women in politics and best-dressed female politician awards.
The brainchild of events guru Lloyd Ngavu, the glamorous SA Politician Awards will be held in Cape Town next month.
Ngavu Enterprise project manager Veronica Modieleng said it was the glitz and glamour of the opening of parliament that had inspired her boss to come up with an awards concept.
“The awards will give recognition to the politicians who are doing great things for our country. The nomination process was done by the public through our websites and social networks,” she said.
“Now the public will have to vote for their favourite politicians and the winners will receive a certificate and an award statue as a way of showing appreciation for the good job they have done for our country.”
Modieleng said the company would fund the event and hoped to make money from the ticket sales.
