Paterson eyesore really a dumpsite

A PATERSON dumpsite that residents believed was illegal as it had no signs or fencing, is in fact legitimate.

So said Sundays River Valley Municipality spokeswoman Vuyiseka Mboxela.

This follows complaints from residents about an informal dumpsite having sprung up in the small town recently.

The Herald reported last week that residents had said Paterson was slowly turning into a massive rubbish dump, and their pleas for a designated dumpsite had fallen on deaf ears.

“This is a landfill site and it can’t look any different from any other landfill sites,” Mboxela said.

But she could not explain why there was no fencing or signs.

She said the municipality had hired an official to watch over the site and a nearby treatment works. “The duties of the person are to ensure that no resident or children come to play near the area as it is a health risk.”

Residents also complained about refuse not being collected since November but Mboxela refuted this, saying a company had been hired to remove household rubbish.

Paterson business owner Bekram Minnie, who originally contacted The Herald to voice his concerns about the state of the town, said: “If they are doing their job then why is there so much trash everywhere?”
