Two held over shot buck
A SECURITY guard and a companion were arrested outside Uitenhage yesterday after allegedly shooting a bushbuck with revolvers belonging to the company that employs the guard.
The two men were reportedly also using one of the firm’s bakkies.
Police said the men were apprehended with two .38 special revolvers, and a bushbuck was found shot dead alongside the R75.
One of the men was a security guard at Isidingo Security Services, and the other a friend of the guard.
Police declined to name the men – aged 23 and 25 – until they have been formally charged in court.
Insiders said the company was under investigation for the possible flouting of firearm-related laws.
Police spokeswoman Captain Gerda Swart said Uitenhage police officials spotted the bakkie on the side of the road at about 3.20am.
One man was standing alongside it and another was seen in bushes carrying a spotlight.
A shot bushbuck was found and a dog was next to the dead animal.
The vehicle, firearms and bushbuck were confiscated.
Uitenhage station commander Brigadier Laurence Soekoe Swart said the men were to appear in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.
Isidingo Security Services Eastern Cape manager George Bezuidenhout welcomed the probe into the use of the firm’s firearms.
