If you attend university, you must pay the fees

- Dallas Oesterlein, Port Elizabeth

EVERYONE knows that university fees must be paid. This is higher education and is historically known to be expensive.

No-one in their right mind can expect this debt to be written off. When you signed on, you knew how much it would cost.

The responsibility is now yours to see to it that it gets paid. Why do some people think that they are entitled to have this higher education but it must be free?

In fact, in South Africa there are far too many people who think they are entitled to everything free.

If you want to attend university, you have to pay for this education. There are many, many people out there that would love to attend university, but cannot afford it.

There are many parents who have made many sacrifices so that their children can attend.

Just because you are unhappy with paying for your education, it does not give you the right to destroy what exists and prevent those who do want to be educated from exercising their rights. Stop behaving like spoilt brats who cannot get their own way.

Some of you can also stop riding on the “I am one of the previously disadvantaged” bus – that is so very old and worn out. Some of you were not even born 25-odd years ago, so you do not fall under that heading.

It is time to get off that old bus and climb on a new one.

Always looking back to the past will not give you a new future without baggage. We need to look to the future so it can be changed to a healthy one.

We need to be examples to the children who look to adults to lead them down the right path.
