REPLIES TO READERS’ COMMENTS TRUMP supporter (“Replies to readers’ comments”, January 23), yes, I’m honoured to tell you that I have heard of “democratic choice”. But the fact that Donald Trump is president even though he won far fewer votes than Hillary Clinton doesn’t seem like democracy to me! You refer to those who oppose Trump as “Democrat crybaby” and “sore losers”. Trump set the precedent for “sore loser” when he demanded to see Barack Obama’s birth certificate and college records!

Like you, many people, including Daron Mann, have condemned the protest action against Trump. They also reckon that “Trump was elected via a democratic process and we must accept him as president”. Yet those same people have attended protests to call for the resignation of President Jacob Zuma. Zuma was also elected via a democratic process! Double standards must fall. JW

“NOTHING’S changed in northern areas” (January 17): Rome wasn’t built in a day! The DA is trying its best to tackle a mountain of “debris” left behind. The cleanup is huge! CHER, PORT ELIZABETH MY husband and I also saw many workers sitting idle during a Monday morning, all on their cellphones (“Workers sit idle during morning”, January 24). I was angry. I just wondered if they had no work, surely they could be put to use elsewhere. As a ratepayer I pay their wages. Cellphones are a great distraction. Maybe they should be handed in and locked away on their arrival at work for their shift. There are many folk looking for jobs. OBSERVER

SHARP Shooter, as per my SMS last week (“New series unimpressive”, January 18) – the second episode was no better. Do others like it? I’ll try one more week. EVE THE second Sharp Shooter was a huge improvement with the clear focus on contestants. THEO MARAIS, PLETTENBERG BAY

WOW! D R Galloway (“Stop criticising president”, January 24) has such huge blinkers he ought to register a patent on them! JAX D R Galloway has the gall to tell us to “embrace our president in a new patriotism”. Well, let me remind him that patriotism is love of country, not subservience to a tainted party political hack. Nevertheless, whenever I hear someone beating the patriotism drum, I’m reminded of Dr Samuel Johnson’s adage, “Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel”. ED KIRWIN

D R Galloway, are you nuts or are you living on another planet? How can we embrace Jacob Zuma when he is the main Brutus stabbing the ancestors in the back? PETER MARION Harning (“Cartoons insulting”, January 17) has no sense of humour. Why play the hackneyed race card ad nauseam? Cartoonists lampoon their objects to ridicule their flawed characters and demonstrate their sins. Viva Wiggett, viva! RF

IF you remove Mark Wiggett, I remove my subscription. BA SUGAR SCARE ANOTHER EXCUSE TO TAX US? WHY is it that after 68 years sugar is all of a sudden going to kill me? Is this not just another excuse to tax us on something else again? SUFFERING TAXPAYER HUGE HOLE IN CITY CENTRE STREET

HUGE hole in St Andrew’s Street off Strand Street. Going to cause damage to the car of some unsuspecting driver. CONCERNED ROAD USER

NOT FRONT PAGE NEWS THE Herald front page article, “Rover test plans put worried Thatcher aides into overdrive” (January 23): while an interesting story, surely not front page news! ET LIFE WORTH SO LITTLE

”BODY of baby found in rubbish bag” (January 24): if life means so little, tell me why do we still pray for rain? Don’t we all deserve the same fate? A MYBURGH, CENTRAL, PORT ELIZABETH WHAT ABOUT NOORDHOEK BOATHOUSES? IF the Georgious must demolish their spa (“Georgious lose court battle over spa”, January 19), why are the Noordhoek boathouses still there after all these years? CURIOUS BLACK THE COLOUR OF BURNT-OUT CAR

HENRY Ford famously said customers could have any colour car they wanted, as long as it was black. Now we know why. That’s the colour of a burnt-out hulk. DERRICK FELLOWS MAYBE KNEW LEOPARD WAS IN AREA I THINK the farmer and his people knew the leopard was in the area (“Investigation called for after leopard attack”, January 18). The whole thing sounds fishy to me. Please sort this out. JOHN GROW UP AND BEHAVE LIKE ADULTS

WHEN will the Democrats in the US grow up and behave like adults? DISGUSTED
