Bosses roast party members following debacle in council

- Johnnie Isaac isaacj@timesmedia.co.za

THE ANC’s regional bosses have come out strongly against the party’s own Nelson Mandela Bay deployees for the motion of no confidence debacle this week, saying it was not the official stance of the ANC.

Regional task team coordinator Beza Ntshona said the utterances of a few individual members, and some of its councillors, should not be misconstrued as the party’s official position.

He distanced himself from the pronouncements made by regional spokesman Gift Ngqondi and chief whip Litho Suka in the media since last week.

They said they would table a motion for a vote of no confidence in mayor Athol Trollip at Tuesday’s council meeting, but the motion was not tabled.

Ntshona said yesterday: “The ANC never took a position or a resolution of vote of no confidence but agreed to engage with political parties in council on strategic issues of governance so as to find one another. “The ANC official position is only officially communicated by the ANC regional secretary, in this case the RTT coordinator comrade mandated by the RTT.”

He criticised the “ill-discipline and anarchist” behaviour of certain members of the ANC.

He said the party remained committed to its role as an opposition and would continue working with other opposition parties on issues of common interest.

It would continue peaceful mass action on all issues related to the Assistance to the Poor programmes, corruption and flouting of procurement procedures.

“We will [also] ensure that ward committees are democratically elected,” he said.
