Madibaz retain lead despite draws

NMMU Madibaz played to a goalless draw against Fairview Rovers in an intense Safa-NMB SAB League match at the Marock Road field on Saturday.

The match could have gone either way, with Rovers taking the initiative from the start to control the game.

The students could have gone a goal ahead, but Kieran Koert failed to hit the target from close range.

Then it was Rovers’ turn to suffer as they had what looked like a legitimate claim for a penalty turned down.

After the break the students came out firing, but were kept at bay by a determined Rovers’ defence.

Despite the draw, Madibaz retain their comfortable position at the top. “While we are happy to retain our position, we are concerned that this is the third consecutive Saturday that we have drawn our matches,” NMMU manager for sport Mark Tommy said.

“We are not making excuses, but to be fair to the boys this is their fourth double header in as many weeks.”

At the Walmer High School field, Ikamva Movers turned the tables on Mabayibone Strikers, reversing the 3-1 defeat in the first round.

Strikers drop to third and are displaced by Camper United, who beat Young Cosmos 1-0.

In a battle of the tailenders, Despatch Pioneers and Island City drew 0-0.

Results:

Mabayibone Strikers 1 Ikamva Movers 3, Despatch Pioneers 0 Island City 0, Fairview Rovers 0 NMMU Madibaz 0, Camper United 1 Young Cosmos 0, Central Acemates 0 Royal Bucks 1, Motherwell 1 PE Sundowns 2.
