IT lab a boost for learning at Walmer school
PORT Elizabeth’s Walmer Primary School received an IT laboratory with an interactive, computerised white board worth R100 000 yesterday.
The school’s new E-learning solution white touch board will offer the 468 pupils a learning experience that brings sound and vision together on the large touchscreen board.
It was donated by the Eastern Cape Gambling and Betting Board (ECGB) working together with the departments of social development and education.
It took five days to train the teachers to have a better understanding of how to operate the white board.
It was all fun and games yesterday as teachers and pupils showed off the skills they had acquired.
Grade 5 pupil Anam Lukwe, 11, said she was excited about the board.
“It makes learning easy and fun. I like that there is not much writing, we just press everything on the board,” she said.
Social Development MEC Nancy Sihlwayi said: “We are happy to have a private sector which always comes and assists us.”
Gambling Board strategic manager Luvuyo Tshaka said the white board meant the children would have an opportunity to better understand maths.
Education MEC Mandla Makupula committed to providing another projector and laptop.
“We want to make sure pupils of today are able to utilise technology. We are [also] going to bring in additional security measurements so as to keep this equipment safe.”
School principal Zukiswa Maku said the IT lab would improve the quality of teaching and learning to prepare the pupils for the future.
