Fashion with heart

Going red for good health

-

THE American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women Red Dress Fall/Winter show raised awareness during New York Fashion Week last week with celebrities ramping it up with the colour of love.

This year’s Red Dress Collection, presented by Macy’s department store, is an exclusive event where designers, models and celebrities demonstrate their support for women’s heart health during New York Fashion Week.

Hosted by Katie Holmes – wearing a beaded gown by Marchesa – many of the models had seen family members suffer from heart conditions and several had lost loved ones to heart disease.

“I GO RED because my dad had heart disease and I want to preserve my own health and encourage others to do the same,” actress Juliette Lewis said.

Disney star Peyton List, 18, also had a personal connection: “I GO RED for my aunt who had a mitral valve prolapse, and to remind women to take care of their bodies and that heart disease is not just a man’s disease.”

Founded by The Heart Truth, the event reminds women of the need to protect their heart health, inspiring them to make a change because cardiovascular diseases kill nearly one in three women each year – about one women every 80 seconds.

The good news is that up to four out of five – 80% – of cardiovascular diseases may be preventable with education and lifestyle changes.

You can control or treat risk factors with lifestyle changes and your healthcare provider’s help:

High blood pressure, smoking, high blood cholesterol, lack of regular activity, obesity or overweight and diabetes

You cannot change these risk factors:

Age, gender, heredity (family health history), race and if you have previously had stroke or heart attack.
