Pearson see off Grey in T20 final
PE side win all six of their matches against Selborne
PEARSON’S first cricket team displayed perfect execution of skill, guts and determination as they knocked out last year’s Warriors representatives Grey High School in the PE City final of the Cricket SA T20 competition played at the Pollock Oval last week.
Asked to bat, Pearson started the innings with a healthy run-rate, mainly due to Pearson opener David Bosch.
He put his team in a good position with his positive batting as Pearson scored 48 runs in the six-over powerplay at the start of the innings.
David batted maturely as the Pearson batters accumulated runs cleverly in the middle overs.
Rodwill Baatjies then helped Pearson finish strongly, scoring 33 off 30 balls as Pearson posted 145/6 in their 20 overs. David scored 61 of 54 balls.
Nicolas Fowler was the best bowler for Grey with 2/15 in three overs.
The Grey innings got off to the worst possible start, as opener Sean Callaghan was run out from a direct hit by Bosch without facing a ball, off the third ball of the innings.
The Pearson bowlers bowled with great control and restricted the Grey batsman from scoring freely.
At 67/3, Grey batters Jose Smith and Tristan Stubbs got their team back into contention with a well-played 46-run partnership for the fourth wicket.
Scoreboard pressure mounted and Grey lost Stubbs at a critical stage.
Alex Draai and Pearson captain Keeran Forbes then bowled superbly in the last five overs as Grey ended on 120/6, handing Pearson a 25-run victory.
Keeran picked up 2/19 in four overs. Jose top-scored for Grey with 51 not out off 44 balls.
GREY v SELBORNE
GREY High won all six of their matches against Selborne at the weekend.
The Grey first team had a good fourwicket win over a strong Selborne team.
Selborne won the toss and batted first, and were reasonably well placed at 81 for four.
Tiaan van Vuuren (3/33) struck just before the drinks break giving Grey the upper hand.
Things were wrapped up quickly after drinks, Matthew Biggs taking 3/0 and Selborne 115 all out.
Grey again had a stuttering start with three early dismissals, leaving them precariously placed at 14/3.
Luke Beaufort survived a difficult early session and then went on to play a superb innings with a combination of patience and aggression.
He steered the ship home with good support from Jose Smith (26), scoring an excellent 71 not out. Grey won a tense encounter by four wickets.
ST ANDREW’S v KINGSWOOD
ST ANDREW’S College pulled off a polished win over Kingswood College in the CSA T20 competition and followed this up with a dominant display of power hitting against Union High School.
James Quarmby’s 3/17 earned him man of the match against Kingswood, and David Rushmere’s belligerent 188 off just 78 balls against Union High was a joy to watch and entertained the afternoon crowd on Lower field.
Kingswood won the toss against St Andrew’s and had little hesitation in electing to bat first in warm conditions.
St Andrew’s picked up wickets at regular intervals, which made it tough for Kingswood to gain momentum. However, they persevered and posted a competitive 170-run total in their 50 overs.
Aiden Hawkesworth anchored the Kingswood innings on a well-played 39 and Robert Quarmby bowled superbly, picking up four wickets for 34 runs.
St Andrew’s were almost home on 164/3, but then the clouds rolled in.
The Kingswood seamers bowled a superb line, picking up four quick wickets.
St Andrew’s dug deep and the earlier 94-run partnership between Murray Koster and Murray Wilson was enough for a St Andrew’s victory by three wickets in the 47th over. Hilton Krige bowled 3/29.
