St George’s hearty soup feeds the soul
Preparatory school in soup kitchen drive to feed underprivileged
CARING for their community and making a difference in the lives of the underprivileged, pupils from St George’s Prep sliced and diced and prepared vegetables for their soup kitchen drive yesterday.
From 8.30am to 10.30am pupils from grades 4 to 7 were actively involved in the schools soup kitchen.
They washed, chopped, peeled and packaged various vegetables which they then delivered to Walmer Township.
Vegetables were donated to the school for the cause by the classes involved while Grade 6 pupils supplied the peelers.
School campus head Alex Hall said the initiative was part of the school’s outreach programme.
“Grade 7 pupils [were given] the opportunity to deliver the vegetables themselves [offering] them more insight into the needs of others in our community,” Hall said.
Head of marketing and admissions at St George’s Prep Dawn Berry said the school worked closely with the Walmer Angel Project run by Glenda Brunette and decided to support her with the soup drive project.
“Our main aim behind this project was to get our children actively involved in outreach rather than just bringing donations of cash to the eschool.
“Staff, boys and girls all worked together at [the] school washing, slicing, dicing and preparing vegetables and packaging canned food, rice and pasta for our Grade 7 pupils to take to the soup kitchen later in the morning.”
Berry said it was a “wonderful team effort” and the children and staff enjoyed being involved in the process.
“Once the buses were packed, staff and 12 of our Grade 7 pupils left for Walmer Township to actively help at the soup kitchen,” she said.
The pupils were put to work helping out in the kitchen with the food and in the creche feeding and drawing with the little ones.
Others assisted with teaching adults how to read and write in the Adult Literacy Programme run by the Walmer Angel Project.
“It was really an eye-opening experience for our children to see how little people have and how much we take for granted,” Berry said.
