Long-standing record under threat at Fairview

- Herald Racing Editor

A 17-year-old course record of 81,11 seconds is at stake when the Ibhayi Stakes takes place over 1 400m at Fairview tomorrow. Nitrogen set the record on June 11, 1999 with 54,5kg on his back.

It is not every day that a record stands for so long and therefore hard work awaits the eight runners in Race 8 where R150 000 in prize money is at stake.

Gimme The Stars is the likely favourite to record his third successive victory for the Yvette Bremner yard, but Corné Spies-trained Bollemakiesie and Justin Snaith’s Cock-A-Hoop will be definite threats.

Bollemakiesie, who will have Craig Zackey aboard, has experience on his side. He’s already has 31 runs under the belt, while Gimme The Stars will only be contesting his 10th race.

Bollemakiesie is currently in terrific form with a win, three seconds and two thirds in his last six starts.

Cock-A-Hoop is a big danger with Gavin Lerena up. With two wins from 10 starts, he has the ability to win the race.

In his last start at Kenilworth on December 31, he finished a respectable third, just 1,30 lengths behind Rinjani over 1 400m. With good Western Cape form it will come as no surprise if Lerena cruises to victory.

Bremner’s Flight Captain also deserves respect. The son of Captain Al is also a two-time winner from 10 starts and his current form cannot be faulted.

Story Of My Life and Grandissimo are upset material and punters are advised to monitor their betting.

In the final analysis, Bollemakiesie gets the vote to beat Cock-A-Hoop, Gimme The Stars and Flight Captain for the minor placings.

The last race of the day is usually a tricky affair with upset results but on this occasion Victoria College and Another Night looks strong enough to see punters through.

The first race starts at 1235 with the Fairview Juvenile Plate for fillies over 1 000m.

Via Seattle is set for her second win from two starts with Lyle Hewitson in the saddle for the Bremner yard.
