St Andrew’s play to seven-wicket win

-

ST Andrew’s first team beat Grey firsts by seven wickets in a quality game of schoolboy cricket played on the Lower Field at St Andrew’s over the weekend.

Grey won the toss and elected to bat first on a pitch that offered something for the bowlers in the first hour.

The St Andrew’s bowlers bowled well and removed four of the Grey top five batsmen in the first hour.

At 62 for five, Grey were in big trouble, but Jose Smith steadied the ship with the help of Heath Richards, who made a solid 30.

At lunch, Grey were in a better position at 191 for six, aiming for anything above 230. Smith then continued working hard and made his way to a fine 113.

He was supported after lunch by Ben Dryden (36 not out) and Grey managed to declare on 234 for seven, leaving St Andrew’s approximately 50 overs to chase down the target.

James Quarmby picked up three wickets and was well supported by quick bowlers Chris Norval and Robert Quarmby.

In St Andrew’s turn at the crease, LJ du Preez picked up the early wicket of David Rushmere and the game had swing in Grey’s favour.

But the St Andrew’s second-wicket partnership between Peter Jarvis and Chris Benjamin of 217 was superb.

They scored at four an over, which eventually meant that St Andrew’s only needed 90 off the final 20 overs.

Despite Grey getting two late wickets, St Andrew’s won the game by seven wickets with an over to spare.

Jarvis was dismissed for a very well played 115 off 137 balls and Benjamin displayed maturity in batting through to ensure the win by ending on 91 not out.
