SEVEN people were injured, two of whom are still in hospital, when a car veered off the road and crashed into them in KwaNobuhle.

Five of the injured were ANC members who had earlier attended the party’s Human Rights Day event at the Babs Madlakane Hall in Uitenhage.

One of the injured, Ntombekhaya Gunguluza, said: “We were sitting on the lawn after we had attended a human rights event.

“A car came off the road and drove into us. The driver didn’t stop. While he was accelerating away, he bumped another pedestrian who had just passed us.”

Mandisa George, whose sister Thembela was one of the injured, said: “I had left to braai meat when I heard people screaming.

“When I came back, there were casualties everywhere.”

She said her sister and Kungezwa Makeleni had been taken to Livingstone Hospital, while the other five were treated at Uitenhage Provincial Hospital and released. Police spokesman Sergeant Majola Nkohli said a case of reckless and negligent driving was under investigation.

Nkohli said a blue Fiat Uno had allegedly been speeding when it left the road and mowed down the pedestrians.

Additional charges could be added when the culprits were arrested, he said.

The ANC in Nelson Mandela Bay wished its members a speedy recovery.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with these volunteers for strength and rapid recuperation,” the party said.
