Top sides meet at Old Grey tourney

THE annual Tavcor Commercial Old Grey cricket six-a-side tournament will spring into action at Freeplay Park tomorrow, with the first games starting at 8.30am.

The popular tournament has been a date on the Eastern Province calendar for some time and it is the 55th time Old Grey have hosted the event.

The tournament has played host to Old Grey legends including the Pollock brothers, Athol McKinnon, Gavin Cowley, Dave Callaghan, Vlam Michau, Keith and Terry Reid and many other star players from the school who have represente­d Eastern Province.

The tournament sees all the top club sides in Port Elizabeth taking part, including Old Grey, NMMU, Uitenhage, Union, United, United Brothers and Motherwell.

Due to the popularity of the event, the number of teams in the main tournament has been increased to 14 this year.

Last year’s winners, NMMU, have entered three sides and will be looking to retain the cup.

Old Grey Cricket have encouraged teams to take their families and supporters to make the day a fun event.

The Old Grey Sports Club will be supplying a jumping castle for kids and the restaurant will be open to the public

Old Grey chairman Dave Callaghan said: “It is a wonderful opportunit­y for clubs to unite and to celebrate the end of another Eastern Province club season.”
