Get up close with zero-waste guru

Lifestyle author to visit Garden Route

- Herald Reporter

AFRENCH guru on how to live an eco-friendly life in style will visit the Garden Route next month to share her philosophy. Zero Waste author and entrepreneur Bea Johnson will give a talk in Plettenberg Bay on Saturday May 6.

Johnson, a native of France who now lives in California, started to adopt a “Zero Waste” lifestyle in 2008, saying that her life and that of her family changed for the better.

“We not only feel happier, but we also lead more meaningful lives based on experiences instead of stuff,’” writes Johnson on her website.

Since then, her blog and bestselling book, Zero Waste Home– which has been translated into 14 languages – have launched a global movement, inspiring thousands of people throughout the world to “live simply and take a stance against needless waste”.

“I propose a simple guideline, my 5R’s: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rot (and only in that order),” says Johnson.

“My vocation is to shatter misconceptions associated with the Zero Waste lifestyle, to prove that waste-free living can not only be stylish but also lead to significant health benefits, and time and money savings.”

Plett Tourism and Eco Atlas are bringing Johnson to the Beacon Island Resort during the first Plett Tourism Thought Leadership Programme initiative on May 6.

Her visit to Plett is part of a national tour next month with talks in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and Plettenberg Bay, to educate and inspire people to live a lifestyle that will reduce their waste to landfill and live a simpler, healthier lifestyle.

Johnson has given more than 100 speeches in more than 20 countries on five continents since 2011, including addresses at the European Parliament, United Nations, Google, Adobe and others.
