Cash incentive to win 10km Freedom Run

- Mogan Segadavan segadavanm@timesmedia.co.za

WITH winners’ prizes of R10 000 for both men and women, there will be much interest in the Motherwell 10km Freedom Run on Saturday.

Even the second prize of R6 000 is nothing to sneeze at. The 10th prize is R400.

Elroy Gallant, who won the race in 28:50 last year, will not be defending his title as he will be competing in the South African track and field championships in Cape Town.

In his absence, Gladwin Mzazi and Mbongeni Ngxazozo, from Central Gauteng, will be leading the charge for the top prize.

Melikhaya Frans, who finished second last year in 29:09, will be carrying local hopes, together with Mariano Essau and Amos Nyongo.

Both Frans and Essau were gold medallists in the Two Oceans 21km last Saturday.

Western Province star Zintle Xiniwe will be back to defend her women’s title.

Lebogang Phalula (Central Gauteng) and Rutendo Nyahore (Zimbabwe) are expected to be her main challengers.

Ntombesintu Mfunzi, who finished fifth in the Two Oceans ultra on Saturday, will carry local hopes.

The first 400 entries in the 10km and first 200 entries in 5km fun run/walk will receive free T-shirts.

Entries, at sports shops in the metro, close at 5pm today.

Late entries will be accepted at the NU2 Stadium (marquee tent) from 5pm to 8pm on Friday and 5.30am on Saturday morning.

Entry fee is R50 for the 10km and R20 for the 5km. There is a R30 temporary licence fee for the longer race.

EPA registered athletes over 65 will pay a reduced fee of R20 for the 10km race.

The 10km run starts at 7am and the fun run at 7.15am.
