FORMER The Herald Miss Port Elizabeth NONO TEMBANI nee Gali, is in favour of a workout partner, especially now that she is a working mother and wife, with a six-year-old son Buhle who has just started Grade 1.

Exercising with someone is much better than doing it on your own. There is that push from the other person, that commitment.

It’s been seven years since I had Buhle and it’s been a rollercoaster ride when it comes to exercise and weight.

Some days are better than others, but this year we – hubby Thembinkosi and I – took a vow to change our lifestyle.

I also have my gym buddy Babalwa Mntoninzi and I must say because of her motivation, I have been more active.

It’s all about finding a balance – it’s easier said than done, but it can be done.

It’s very easy on your own to just not do anything, as opposed to knowing that you cannot disappoint or let that person down.

Solid friendships can be built on the path of bettering yourself as the goal and the drive are the same. Early last year, I met a stranger while running. He asked me to join him and I was a bit sceptical so I refused. To my surprise, I met him again along my route, running, and that was the birth of #team5am.

This group now has 14 members and we meet daily at 5am to run around the streets of Grahamstown. All of us are novice runners, mostly running to keep fit or shed extra weight. We start our days together and have had so much impact on each others’s lives as we run, share meals and also talk about our different careers.

Starting out as a walker who could barely run a 1km without stopping. I am now doing 10km, 15km, 21km and 42.2km races.
