Man arrested after rifle found behind his fridge

A PORT Elizabeth man was arrested after a modified hunting rifle was found hidden behind the fridge of his home in NU10, Motherwell.

The hunting rifle barrel had been sawn off and a scope was fitted to the top of it.

Police spokesman Constable Mncedi Mbombo said the bust came after police received a tip-off about a stolen firearm being stashed inside the Luzipho Street house.

Police raided the home at about 11.40pm on Monday.

“Police found a rifle hidden behind the fridge,” Mbombo said.

Mbombo said the serial number had been removed.

“The ballistic unit is working with the weapon to determine where it was stolen from,” Mbombo said.

They will also ascertain if the firearm is linked to any other crimes, he said.

The 20-year-old suspect is expected to appear in the Motherwell Magistrate’s Court today.
