Overpopulation paints bleak future
RE: “Adopt China’s one-child model too” (The Herald, May 4). I agree Sandy – “overpopulation is by far the biggest problem facing our future”.
I wonder how many young people have even thought about the future regarding this topic. They are the potential parents – and unless we educate our youth forthwith, 20 years from now lies a very bleak future.
We may be very concerned about our water availability, food sources (farming), jobs, housing, schools – just think how things will be 20, 40 years from now. The same old Mother Earth, same resources, but double the number of people to provide for.
Smaller families are the answer – but then it should only apply to people who really want children, not just babies from casual relationships. This is a very serious issue.
Imagine, also, the waste dumps 20 years hence.
Unless we start seriously recycling, our planet earth will be one big rubbish dump, and rats, cockroaches and disease will be the order of the day – another serious topic for education, at school and at home.
As far as jobs go, I feel we should be concentrating on the most necessary occupations, like plumbers, electricians etc. Our country needs them.
Future life is a big challenge. I hope and pray our young people get it right – a lot is on their shoulders.
