THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has partnered with Marina Sea Salt on a recycling project to be rolled out in nine schools around the metro.

The War on Waste Recycling Awareness pilot project was launched at Kleinskool Primary School yesterday.

The collaboration between the municipality and Marina Sea Salt is partially to ensure that the schools participating in the initiative teach pupils the importance of maintaining a clean environment while having fun.

Marina Sea Salt marketing manager Bennie Bekker said: “We’ve associated with the municipality and selected nine schools in the Bay to take part in this awareness project.

“To the kids, it’s going to [be] a competition they can have fun with, but ultimately we want to clean up the Bay.

“So we’ve told them to make sure they do not throw away Marina Sea Salt containers used at home but instead throw them in the big Marina recycle bin which [will be placed at] the school.

“Every week, we will buy the containers [at] R2 a bottle. The proceeds will go to the school.”

Prizes include a bicycle and KFC or McDonald’s meal vouchers for the class that collects the most containers.

The school that brings in the most containers by August 31, when the competition closes, will win R5 000.

Bay deputy mayor Mongameli Bobani said while the competition would run for three months, he would like it to continue for the rest of the year.

Kleinskool Primary principal Sean Abrahams said: “I think the project is something the school and the kids can really benefit from.”
