Honours even as top girls’ teams clash

-

COLLEGIATE Girls’ High hosted this year’s derby day against Stellenbosch’s Rhenish Girls’ High School.

The schools competed against each other in hockey and netball, but unfortunately there was no first team netball match due to Eastern Cape and Boland trials.

The netball was a really even affair, with both schools winning five, losing five and drawing one.

Hockey went a little more in the host school’s favour as Collegiate won five, lost one and drew three.

The clash between the first teams was a spectacular, end-to-end fixture which ended level at 0-0.

Both teams had their fair share of opportunities to take the lead, but were unable to put the ball in the back of the net.

Collegiate hockey head Andrew Beynon said: “The first team fixture was a fantastic game and it was great to see such a high level of girls hockey on display.

“Our girls have worked immensely hard this season and it is paying off on the pitch.

“I am very proud of the game our girls are playing.”

Collegiate also recently attended the All Girls’ Festival, hosted by Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool Pretoria (Affies) and took part in hockey, netball, squash, tennis, golf and debating.

The highlight of this festival was definitely the first hockey team placing second out of 20. The team went all the way to the final without conceding a goal before losing 3-0 to a strong Oranje team.

In netball, they did incredibly well to place seventh out of 22. This is a good improvement from 2015’s 11th place.

Sport head Chantell Posthumus said: “Although we would have liked to have done a bit better across the board, we are very chuffed with how well we did in hockey and netball.

“The festival was an unbelievable experience and we are very glad that we were able to participate.”
