WATER EVERYWHERE: TIME TO CONSERVE IT “WATER, water everywhere, nor any drop to drink” (Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s poem, The Ancient Mariner) is very appropriate as water is fast becoming a serious constraint in some parts of the world and SA. Yet there is underground water, there is rainwater flowing into the rivers and much of it is finding its way into the oceans. We need to conserve water as much as possible – collect in reservoirs and dams, transport it to where it is needed in pipes, canals and tunnels (as in the Lesotho Highlands Water Scheme). Leaks need to be minimised but our underground infrastructure is old and getting older. Unemployment is above 20% and yet we can’t find enough plumbers. Surely we can resolve this shortage through appropriate training and career choices? Dubai is a huge, thriving metropolis with beautiful golf courses, landscaped areas, artificial ski slopes, water features – and yet it doesn’t rain there! The solutions are known but funding is the problem. A phased water conservation and development master plan is required to complement future scenarios . . .
