Premier League kicks off with 11-goal thriller

THE Pefa Score Premier League kicked off at the weekend at the Westbourne Oval, where NMBM hosted Leeds United.

It turned out to be an 11-goal thriller, with the hosts emerging 6-5 winners.

The majority of the games were played on Saturday afternoon.

PE Defence squared off with NMMU Madibaz at the south campus.

Madibaz scored a well-deserved, workmanlik­e 5-0 victory against PE Defence.

The students took an early lead through Mandaliso Soko, after a defensive mixup by the visitors.

Lubabalo Dimane scored Madibaz’s second goal before Litha Fingo converted a penalty before half time.

The students tightened their grip on the game with an excellent team move that started inside their half and was finished off by Avuya Ngwenda.

Banele Mvolontshi scored the fifth goal for the students.

Rising Stars hosted Chippa United at the VP Sports Club.

Chippa won 7-3, with goals scored by Gregory Damons (4), Dimarco Booysen (2) and Zolane Ndubane.

Hearts played their first home game of the season after The Valley was reopened.

They went down 1-0 to Central Acemates.

Blue Ribbon St George’s were looking to return to winning ways at Union Olympics, against a Mahle Old Grey, who dropped two points last weekend.

The visitors opened the scoring after 30 seconds, with a brilliant team goal in which they worked the ball down the right flank, resulting in an excellent cross by Michael Hall, which culminated in an excellent finish from Zithulele Mhlontlo.

A mere 10 minutes later, St George’s were awarded a penalty, which produced an excellent save from Cooper Maswana.

The score remained 1-0 until halfway through the second half, when Nkosinathi Speelman went on an excellent run and finished low and hard under the St George’s keeper who was rooted to his goal line.

Then, five minutes later, Old Grey sealed the deal with a third, after a tricky run from Thembelani Tshisa ended up with a brilliant ball to the back post, which was tucked away by Mhlontlo for his second of the game.

PE Home Rovers went all out against Highbury in their fixture at Kemsley Park.

They beat the visitors 6-1 with goals from Lukhanyo Dube (3), Ayawa Chibuike, Siyama Mkeliswa and Kholekile Bacela.
