More than 1 000 junior players take to fields

THE Pefa junior leagues kicked off the new season last week with more than 1 000 junior players from U8 to U18 taking to the fields at venues around the metro.

The U8 and U10 leagues played at the Priory fields together with the new Pefa U6 league which saw the Hearts Braveheart­s beat the Callies Knights 3-2 in a closely-contested affair.

This was thanks to a hat-trick of goals by Hearts player Eliah Booth.

The all-girls Hearts Sweetheart­s U8 team beat Callies Rievers 3-1 with goals by Hannah Morgan, Katelyn van Jaarsveld and Sienna Peens.

In the U8 A section, the Debonairs Pizza St George’s Aces came from 2-0 down at the break to beat Motherwell Academy 5-3, including a hat-trick by Kamva Mrwadi.

In other games, the Priory Chiefs won 4-0 against Callies Warriors, with Enzo Kruger and Cameron Muthen each scoring a brace while the Callies Claymores beat Hearts Tigers 2-0.

In the U10 A section, Priory United beat Motherwell Academy 3-2.

In earlier games, last year’s league winners Callies Highlander­s made their intentions clear with a 4-0 win over Priory All Stars.

In the U12 league games at the Union fields last week, St George’s B beat Callies B 3-0 with some superb skills by twins Ogai and Ofanu Ramphele, while the Hearts A team beat Motherwell Academy 4-0 with two goals from last year’s Safa ILFA Player of the Tournament Ben Peens.

In the U16 division, Forresters staged a comeback from 6-3 down to draw with St George’s, while Callies beat Hearts 4-2 at The Valley.

In the opening games of the U18 league last week, Chippa United drew 2-2 with Highbury at The Oval, while Motherwell Academy and NMMU played to a 2-2 draw at the Missionval­e campus.
