NMMU Madibaz have been crowned the 2016-17 Safa-NMB SAB League champions, winning the title by an incredible 21 points.

The official log was released on Monday after the last match was played the previous day.

An elated Madibaz chairman, Glenton de Kock, said it would be a long time before the feat would be achieved again.

“We put together a five-year plan to get us to the First Division at least,” De Kock said.

“Winning the SAB league has taken us to the halfway mark.

“Our next step is to win the playoffs for a place in the ABC Motsepe League.”

Madibaz director for sport Yoliswa Lumka said plans were in the pipeline to expand football at the university.

“The plan is to move up the ranks, starting with the Motsepe League until we get to the professional ranks,” Lumka said.

“To do this, we have to put structures in place and one of the things we are looking at is establishing a soccer academy similar to the old FCK-UPE academy.”

Meanwhile, in the final SAB league match of the season, Fairview Rovers beat Golden Aces 2-1 at the Zwide Stadium.

The victory was too little, too late for Rovers, who end the season tied in third place with PE Sundowns, two points behind Highland Spurs.

Aces, who were second just two weeks ago, drop down to fourth.

The disappointment of the season no doubt is Mabayibone Strikers.

The Walmer outfit went into the Christmas recess at the top of the log but a string of poor results in the new year sees them end the season ninth on the log.

At the bottom of the log, Royal Bucks, Showvillage United Brothers, Island City and Young Cosmos face an anxious wait to see who will be relegated to their local football association.

Their fate depends on whether Madibaz wins promotion and which teams get relegated from the First Division to the Motsepe League and from the Motsepe League to the SAB league.

KUBS became the new log leaders in the Safa-NMB Women’s League Stream A on Sunday with a 2-0 win over Shatterprufe at the New Brighton Oval.

The New Brighton outfit displaced Highbury, who were held to a 0-0 draw by African Chiefs.

In their previous three matches, Highbury scored 15 goals without reply.

The draw also affected Chiefs’ log standing. They drop to third.

After thumping Vuku Wanderers 5-0 last week, Hearts were almost brought down to earth by a determined Tomorrow Stars, who are without a point on the board.

In the end, Hearts scraped home to a 3-2 victory.

NMMU Madibaz scored their first win of the season, beating Wanderers 2-0 at the Chevrolet Stadium.

In the late match at the same venue, Warriors scored an easy 3-1 win over PE United.
