- – Gareth Wilson

A BRITISH American Tobacco delivery driver was robbed of 200 cartons of cigarettes while at a tavern in New Brighton yesterday.

The robbery happened at Mbirana Place, a tavern in Sopazi Street, at about 1pm.

The estimated value of the stolen cigarettes is R33 000.

Police spokesman Captain Andre Beetge said the robbery happened after two men entered the tavern while stock was being delivered.

“Two men walked in and one pointed a firearm at the driver,” he said.

“They escorted him back to the vehicle where the suspects stole two boxes of cigarettes, each containing 100 cartons.

“After they grabbed the boxes, the men ran off.”
