1987: The UDF secretary in the Border, Makhenkesi Stofile, pictured, is jailed for an effective 11 years in Ciskei for terrorism. 1989: White supremacis­t Barend Strydom receives eight death sentences for a rampage of racial murders in Pretoria the previous year. 1994: Following the election of Nelson Mandela as president of the government of national unity, the UN Security Council lifts the arms embargo against South Africa. 1996: Ian Woodall and Cathy O’Dowd reach the summit of Mount Everest, becoming the first official South African team to do so.
