Sharing your husband ‘not easy’

- Karishma Thakurdin

ALTHOUGH Musa Mseleku’s wives now live in harmony and are like sisters, it was not an easy journey for any of them.

Mseleku’s second wife, MaYeni – whom he met first – said sharing a man did not come easily.

“It took time for us to become the family that we are today‚” she said.

“Some years back we were not like sisters because we didn’t know each other well.”

MaYeni said it had been difficult for her when Mseleku told her he wanted to be a polygamist.

“It was not easy but I had to counsel myself and accept the situation so I could get on with living my life.”

MaYeni admitted that at first sharing a man physically and emotionally had been hard, but said her family had come a long way.

“We [the four wives] respect each other and there is no such thing as hierarchy. I treat them as my equals and we treat each other like sisters.”

Even though there were misunderstandings between them‚ they had learnt to sit down and talk about them, she said.

“I am a quiet person and will not shout at anyone, but if I don’t like something I just talk to that person.”

MaYeni said she had agreed to the reality show because of the stigma attached to polygamy. “Just like a monogamous marriage there are challenges but I am happy and have a fulfilling marriage‚” she said.

Uthando Ne Sthembu airs every Thursday at 8pm on Mzansi Magic DStv Channel 161.
