Goals galore in EP hockey knockout cup

THE Eastern Province Hockey Associatio­n Knockout Cup took place at the weekend, and spectators were treated to some high-scoring matches.

In the men’s premier division, Old Grey suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Lakeside, going down 9-0.

However, the other two

matches in this section were more closely contested, with Mecer NMMU A beating their B side 2-0 and Gelvan Hurricanes scoring a 2-1 win against Rhodes.

The women’s premier division saw an abundance of goals with all three fixtures being one-sided affairs.

Gelvan Tornados beat NMMU B 6-0, St Peters downed Uitenhage 7-0, and NMMU A defeated Pegs A 7-0.

In the men’s presidents division, the scores were closer, but there were still plenty of goals.

Lakeside outscored SK Northerns 5-0, Old Grey beat St Peters 3-0, Wosa beat Gelvan Legends 3-1, while in a tighter contest PEC Chargers secured a 1-0 victory over NMMU Gushers.

In the women’s presidents division, Pirates Jolly Rodgers received a five-point walkover over Rhodes Rats, while Old Collegians beat Mecer NMMU Gusherette­s 3-0.

Wosa rounded out a 5-1 win over NMMU Mashers.

The next round of the competitio­n will take place on June 16 and 17 but for now attention returns to the league.

The matches kick off from 6pm at KC March Astro today.

The 9pm women’s premier fixture between Pegs A and St Peters promises to be an exciting match-up, with St Peters topping the log.

Tomorrow provides ample hockey action, with matches starting at noon at KC March Astro and concluding at 9pm.

NMMU hosts two matches from 1pm, while three fixtures have been scheduled at Rhodes, also starting from 1pm.

Sunday has another full programme with games set to start from 8.30am at KC March,

all the way through to 5.30pm.

The men’s premier fixture between Lakeside Cavaliers and Old Grey, at 4pm, has been billed as one to watch.

There are three fixtures on the programme at NMMU starting at 11.30am.

The men’s premier fixture between NMMU Madibaz and Gelvan Hurricanes will be the featured match at 2.30pm.
