Framesby pull off huge upset in schools humdinger

-

FRAMESBY caused an upset when they beat Brandwag 19-15 in an absolute nail-biting schools rugby fixture in Uitenhage on Saturday.

Scrumhalf Andre Gerber scored the winning try for the Port Elizabeth visitors moments before referee Phillip Bosch blew the final whistle.

Bosch took his time to make up his mind before he was satisfied that Gerber got the ball over the line under a pile of bodies.

Framesby had their tails up after the previous week’s victory over Marlow, while Brandwag showed a fatal lack of rhythm after a two week lay-off since their victory over Muir.

It was also the second time this year that Framesby have come away from Uitenhage with a lastgasp try, after beating Daniel Pienaar in similar fashion earlier in the year.

Brandwag, with seven of this year’s Eastern Province Craven Week group in the side and enjoying home ground advantage, must have felt they let this one slip through their fingers.

They dominated the possession stakes but spilled many scoring opportunities due to poor passing and handling.

Framesby handled the pressure well and defended strongly.

The heavier Brandwag pack gave Framesby a hard time in the scrums and Zane Barnard was a tower of strength in the lineouts.

Donovan Stevens (lock) and Elandre Smit (No 8) also got over the advantage line on numerous occasions with some strong running, but still Brandwag could not break the spirit of a gutsy team effort from the visitors.

Gerber, who had a fine match, JP Greyling (centre) and Lindsay Potgieter (fullback) scored the Framesby tries. Grassie van Rensburg added two conversions.

Stevens scored twice for Brandwag. Gavin Kriel (left wing) was successful with a conversion and a penalty.

WESTERING v PORT ALFRED

HOME team Westering ran in nine tries to three while romping to an impressive 61-22 victory over Port Alfred on Saturday, writes Alvin Reeves.

The visitors put on a brave performance but they did not have enough firepower to compete with Westering on the day.

The Tigers used their domination up front to spread the ball wide at almost every occasion and they scored some scintillating tries.

Five of their seven backline players in left wing Onika Booi, centre David Jin, centre Sisanda Matlali, right wing Aviwe Mama and fullback Sim Jekwa scored tries.

Even replacement back Garth Munro managed a try.

Their flyhalf Baphelele Pango may not have scored but he was superb on the day controlling the game well in tandem with scrumhalf Thabang Boyce. Pango also slotted five conversions.

Among the forwards, hooker Wesley Anderson was rewarded for his good work with a debut first team try while flank Serra Sompani and No 8 and captain Siviwe Manyati also crossed the tryline.

Jin (2) and Munro also kicked conversions to round off the rout.

For Port Alfred, left wing Tesco Joni, centre Luyolo September and fullback Zenovan Denston scored tries while flyhalf Reneal Coltman slotted two conversions and a penalty.
