Zimbabwean Arubi thwarts Leopards in clash with Stellenbosch

-

SEVERAL superb saves from former Zimbabwe goalkeeper Washington Arubi helped Stellenbosch hold Black Leopards to a 0-0 draw on Saturday in a South African Premiership promotion playoff.

Stellenbosch, who drew 2-2 at home to Baroka three days ago in the first of six minileague matches, survived constant pressure from Leopards in northeastern town Thohoyandou.

The three clubs are competing for one place in the 201718 Premiership, which guarantees an R18-million grant with R29-million in prize money on offer as well.

Leopards had a good chance to score during the first half, but Zambian Mwape Musonda blazed over from just outside the box when oneon-one with Arubi.

A stoppage-time opportunity for Leopards to break the deadlock came to nought as a close-range free-kick was fired straight at the goalkeeper.

“Few clubs leave Thohoyandou with anything so we are happy to get a point,” Arubi, capped 13 times by his country since his 2007 debut, said.

“We knew Leopards would attack relentlessly and our task would be to contain them, ” the 31-year-old said.

Stellenbosch’s Diego Brown was sent off on 87 minutes after two yellow cards.

Baroka, who finished second last in the just-ended Premiership, host second division runners-up Leopards on Wednesday. Stellenbosch, third behind Leopards, hope to play in the Premiership for the first time.

Second division champions Thanda Royal Zulu were promoted automatically in place of bottom Premiership club Highlands Park.
