Woodridge take coastal leg
WOODRIDGE College took the honours when the Port Elizabeth Coastal leg of the SPAR Eastern Cape Hockey Challenge took place at Pearson High on Sunday.
A total of nine schools competed in 20minute matches, aiming for a spot in the final and a chance to advance to the provincial playoffs in August.
A relatively untried Woodridge team, with seven new caps, had a successful weekend on the hockey turf.
After drawing 2-2 with Pearson on Friday evening, this young side were in good spirits for Sunday’s competition, ready to challenge for a place in the final.
After the round-robin format had been played, Woodridge and Collegiate qualified to meet in the semifinals.
The Woodridge side showed great composure to win the eight-second penalty shootout 3-2.
The final was another intense 20-minute match against Alexander Road, with no goals scored at the end of full time.
The Woodridge girls stepped up again to win the eight-second shootout 2-0.
Captain Lauren Booysen received the award on behalf of the team, who will now represent the PE Coastal region in the provincial finals at Woodridge on August 12.
The other four teams who have qualified for the provincial finals are Union High (PE Inland), Kingsridge (Border Inland), York (South Western Districts) and Clarendon (Border Coastal).
