Duo take top Wembley title

- Neale Emslie

CHRIS Loock and Helgard Zietsman emerged as the champions in the annual Wembley Men’s Doubles tennis tournament played at the PE Lawn Tennis Club at the weekend.

The day delivered another highly successful event as 66 players took part in one of the most popular days on the Eastern Province calendar.

The couples were divided into three categories, with the top sides of each section contesting the final to decide the winners.

Zietsman has been a regular contender in the Wembley tournament, winning in 2014 (with Andrew Stuart) and two years ago with Loock.

He and Loock showed their potential as a team by taking the section one title with a comfortable 6-1 result over Eric Fisher and William Wickens in the final.

Veteran pair George Holloway and Peter Sale underlined the value of experience by winning the 2A final with a 6-4 result against Rocco Prinsloo and Franco Nel.

The honours in the 2B section went to Jade Redcliffe and Siyanda Mvubu, who ousted Kegan Topper and Stephan Burgess 6-2 in the title decider.

Tournament director Gavin Cullen said it had been another excellent day of tennis, despite the windy conditions making play tricky at times.

“There was good competition throughout the sections and the finals were well contested,” he said.

“We would like to thank all the players for the support they have shown this tournament, as well as our sponsors who contributed so much to ensure another successful Wembley event.”
