A FAIR TRIAL? WHEN an advocate laments that his client has not had a fair trial (“Shock bid follows Jayde video ruling”, June 13), I wonder, how so? Does he mean that the judge has been influenced by public opinion? Surely not!

Prof Pierre de Vos has posted an interesting article online which says: “There is no duty on us to presume someone is innocent until proven guilty”. Of course you need to read the full article before you go around accusing anyone of being guilty of a crime.

De Vos emphasises that judges must presume the accused to be innocent until the law has taken its course and proven beyond a reasonable doubt that he or she is guilty. In the meantime it is only natural that the man in the street will speculate on the various cases, based, we hope, not on fake news but on the unbiased facts brought to us by The Herald.

GIGABA MUST GO

IF it is true that Malusi Gigaba had a hand in organising the Guptas’ citizenship in SA using corrupt means (“Gigaba in spotlight over Gupta citizenship”, June 13), he must go. He cannot be trusted with our state monetary department. D GUBAYO, MOTHERWELL, PORT ELIZABETH

MONEY FOR SPORT

NMBM to bankroll Kings rugby, Chippa soccer and St George’s cricket (“Shot in arm for battling Chilli Boys”, June 15)? And this after giving the city a massive hike in property revaluations? No money for plumbers or to pay refuse workers. What a fiasco.

REFUSE COLLECTION

DEAR Gift Ngqondi (“Collect township rubbish soon – or else, ANC warns”, June 13), it is now 4.43 on Wednesday afternoon in Charlo. Our garbage has not yet been collected. Just to remind you that I live in one of those “white leafy suburbs”. Life’s really tough here!

TO Birdy (“Nature of work doesn’t justify premium wage”, June 16), exploiting people (refuse collectors, maids, gardeners, workers) is

out. Start recycling. I live in a complex where there is no consideration for space (for empty bottles, cardboard boxes, newspapers, unflattened plastic bottles and the like).

LOTS OF ADVERTS

VERY little news in yesterday’s The Herald, but 11½ pages of supermarket and bottle store ads! Is this necessary all at once?
