Lakeside win tight clash 3-1

Top quality hockey on show in weekend’s feature match

-

LAKESIDE Cavaliers defeated Mecer NMMU Madibaz A in the feature match of last weekend’s hockey fixtures, winning 3-1 after leading 2-1 at the break.

In the first quarter, it was Lakeside who got their name onto the scoreboard first when Brad Dolley finished an excellent assist to score in the fifth minute.

It was honours even for most of the first quarter, but NMMU came back through a penalty corner shortly before the break.

Chad Cairncross beat the Lakeside defence with a superb drag-flick to the top right corner of the goal box.

In the second quarter it was Lakeside, who began to dominate play.

A quick counter-attack midway through the quarter, emanating from a turn-over in the NMMU half, ended in a well-worked goal by Michael Abrahams that took Lakeside into a 2-1 lead at half time.

The third quarter saw both teams upping the match tempo and this resulted in a fastpaced game.

Both teams were awarded a penalty corner, which they failed to convert.

Abrahams completed the second of his two goals with a superb reverse hit to take the score to 3-1 in favour of Lakeside at the final mini-break.

The last quarter produced much of the same high-paced action that had been on display throughout, but neither team could score again.
