Thumping win for in-form St Andrew’s

- Neale Emslie

ST ANDREW’S used the K-Day weekend to produce arguably their most complete performance of the season as they trounced Grahamstown rivals Kingswood 72-5 in their schools rugby encounter at St Andrew’s on Saturday.

The home team are unbeaten against Eastern Cape opposition this season and Kingswood knew they were in for a challenge.

In front of a large crowd, St Andrew’s took control from early in the match, scoring two quick tries by Byron Sharwood, after excellent work from centre Charlie Fleming, and centre Matthew More.

Kingswood gave themselves a glimmer of hope when they pounced on a St Andrew’s error for an intercept try scored by Jeff Mutuku, but that turned out to be the only joy for them on the day.

St Andrew’s moved into overdrive to score further tries by Chulumanco Mngxaso, More and Callum Dugmore to virtually seal the match with a 29-5 lead at half time.

Immediately after the break, the home side signalled their intentions to maintain the pressure when right wing Jack Allanson scored in the corner after a chip through from flyhalf Murray Koster.

With No 8 Zadok Makani having his best game of the season, St Andrew’s ran in tries by More, Mngxaso, Dugmore, Oscar Evans, and Graham de Vos to provide a memorable finish to their reunion weekend.
