Three quick tries spark solid victory

- Neale Emslie

AFTER trailing 10-0 for much of the first half, Grey High scored three tries in 10 minutes to spark a fightback which saw them comfortably defeat Daniel Pienaar 43-25 in their schools rugby encounter at Grey on Saturday.

It was a match which featured some issues of discipline from both sides, with the referee seeing fit to hand out three yellow cards – two to Grey and one to Daniel Pienaar – in the second half.

The match official also blew for numerous infringements in the second half, robbing the game of the entertaining flow normally associated with schoolboy rugby.

After conceding two tries to fullback Dylan le Roux and centre Dirkie Greeff by the 17th minutes, Grey began their road to victory when flyhalf LJ du Preez broke through in the 25th minute, offloading to hooker Corne Slabbert, who barged over under the poles.

This was soon followed by elusive scrumhalf Runaldo Pedro scoring the first of his two tries, after slicing through the visitors’ defence and some slick passing by the backs to put wing Kholiwe Konza over in the corner.

Du Preez added two conversions to give the home team a useful 19-10 lead at the break.

Grey continued to pile on the points in the second half, running in three tries to virtually make the game safe at 38-10 in the 52nd minute.

First Pedro again bamboozled the Daniel Pienaar defence to score under the poles.

This was followed by scores from Konza, after a storming run by No 8 Ryan Adams, and centre and captain for the day Aya Matroos. Du Preez added two more conversions.

With Grey then being regularly penalised by the ref, nippy Daniel Pienaar scrumhalf Sashin Toring used the opportunities to increase the pace with quick taps.

This led to the visitors showing fighting spirit to cross for tries by Greeff and flank Darius Basson, reducing the deficit to 38-20.

However, Grey hit back when the visitors failed to control a kick-off and replacement back Joshua Oosthuysen latched onto the ball to speed through for their seventh try.

Daniel Pienaar had the last say when centre Curtley Deysel scored in the final minute, but it was the home side who secured the spoils at the end of the day.
