TODAY IN HISTORY
1962: The General Law Amendment Act comes into effect, increasing the state president’s power to declare organisations unlawful and to add further restrictions to banning orders, and defining sabotage. 1973: South African athlete Marcello Fiasconaro, pictured, running in the colours of Italy, sets a world 800m record of one minute 43.7 seconds in Milan. 1991: President FW de Klerk and ANC leader Nelson Mandela are named joint winners of the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Peace Prize, a new international peace prize to encourage them to persevere in their efforts to establish a new South Africa.
