Successful Union visit for Graeme

St Andrew’s field new blood and win in Uitenhage, despite early Muir lead

-

GRAEME College enjoyed a successful trip to Graaff-Reinet at the weekend, winning all but one of their rugby matches against hosts Union High. The first team produced an impressive performance to take the honours in the main game 43-19.

Graeme did not have much possession in the first half, but managed to score three tries and looked dangerous every time they had the ball.

Cameron Amos scored two of the tries in yet another strong performance at scrumhalf. Sivu Ngqiyaza added two conversions.

The Union backline also looked dangerous, but the Graeme defence has been brilliant all season and limited the home side to a try and a penalty for a half-time score of 19-8.

Although Graeme were often denied possession, there were moments of individual brilliance and they seemed to score a try each time they received clean possession.

This led to a further four tries in the second, with Ngqiyaza kicking two more conversions.

Special mention must be made of the last try when Eldrico Kivitts scored from his own 22m line after beating numerous defenders in a superb individual effort.

Union High converted two penalties and scored a try of their own in the second half.

ý The Graeme first hockey team played against Cradock High on Friday, with both teams still developing the game at their respective schools.

Graeme were superb, and played attractive hockey. Cradock defended well, but the Graeme side have developed superbly over the last few months and were just too strong, recording an 8-0 victory.

Muir v St Andrew’s

WITH a number of regulars not available, St Andrew’s fielded some new blood in their schools rugby clash against Muir in Uitenhage on Saturday, winning 29-17.

The St Andrew’s team struggled with the intensity produced by Muir in the opening 10 minutes and were soon trailing 3-0.

However, once they managed to gain some territorial parity, the Andreans crossed for tries by wing Ant More and captain Matt More to go 10-3 ahead.

Muir then took advantage of an error from the kick-off and scored under the poles to level the scores.

Just before halftime St Andrew’s flyhalf TK Chuma made an excellent break to put Matt More over for his second try, making the half-time score 17-10.

Muir again started well and soon drew level as the St Andrew’s team looked rattled.

The pressure of maintaining their good form this season was telling and Muir had several chances to take the lead.

It took a moment of brilliance by debutant lock James Plumbridge to turn the fortunes around. Muir kicked the ball through and the young lock found himself isolated.

But he dodged several defenders, sold a dummy and sprinted upfield, putting in a kick for his backs to chase.

This moment seemed to settle the nerves, and St Andrew’s went on to score further tries by Alex Menage and wing Matt Royle to make the final score 29-17.
