-

SPRINTER Mark Cavendish was named as one of the three Britons who will be racing for Team Dimension Data at the Tour de France on Saturday, the South Africa-based team confirmed yesterday.

Cavendish, 32, only returned to full training six weeks ago and has raced just once since after three months out with glandular fever.

“I feel I owe it to myself, the team, our sponsors and most importantly to the Tour itself, given its history and everything that it stands for – as well as the emotional attachment I have for it – to give it my best and to put everything I have into trying to help the team.”

Also selected are double British national champion Stephen Cummings, Bernhard Eisel, Mark Renshaw, Edvald Boasson Hagen, Reinardt Janse van Rensburg, Jaco Venter, Scott Thwaites and Serge Pauwels.

Another South African, Daryl Impey, will be in the colours of the Orica-Scott team. In 2013, the 32-year-old Impey became the first South African to hold the yellow jersey through two stages.

His teammates are Roman Kreuziger, Jens Keukeleire, Simon Yates, Mat Hayman, Luke Durbridge, Esteban Chaves, Damien Howson and Michael Albasini.

The race finishes in Paris on July 23. – Reuters, Sports staff
