Ama-units step closer to title despite draw

DESPITE being held to a surprise 2-2 draw by the Steve Tshwete Villagers at the Molefe field, Amaunits moved to within two points of the Nelson Mandela Bay Masters league title on Sunday.

The Steve Tshwete Villagers are just outside the top eight teams in the league.

But with four matches remaining, Ama-units have an 11-point lead over Eleven Attackers, with PE All Stars a further point behind.

Maximum points against Soweto next week will assure the Kwazakhele side are crowned the champions. Vuyani Mtati and Khaya Xate scored on either side of the break for the log leaders.

King Mfoloza and Phumlani Sayimani replied for Villagers.

Volkswagen, who went into the weekend in second place, blew their chances of closing in on Amaunits when they were beaten 1-0 by Zwide Masters.

Andile MacClean scored the only goal of the match, to propel Masters into the top eight.

As a result, Volkswagen dropped down to fourth place.

Eberspache­r came close to causing the upset of the weekend, when they held Attackers to a goalless draw.

PE All Stars thrashed PE Eleven 3-0 and are a point behind Attackers. Melikhaya Mgudlandlu, Luzuko Hambaze and Andile Dunjwa scored a goal apiece for Stars.

In a battle for a top eight spot, Sparks edged out Winners 2-1.

Mlungisi Bonga and Sizwe Mavovana scored for Sparks, while Nkosana Ndondo replied for Winners.

Helped by an own goal, Young Pirates beat tailenders New Brighton 2 -0. Ntsikelelo Mdepha scored the second goal for Pirates, and Nkosana Ndondo for Brighton.

Veeplaas scored the biggest win, thrashing Soweto 5-1.

Mkhululi Matroos, Mncedisi Matroos, Mzwekhaya Mkayo, Mziyanda Gotyana and Mzuvukile Lengs scored a goal each for Veeplaas, who are three places away from the bottom.

Nazo Blom scored the consolatio­n goal for Soweto, who remain one place above their conquerors.

In another bottom of the table clash, Gqebera beat Joe Sovo 2-1, with goals by Mthonotyi Mokoena and Korsten Vali. Pelelani Kondlo replied for Slovo.

PEACE United retained their one-point lead in the Wafa Premier League with a hard-earned 3-2 win over Ghetto Stars at the Walmer Community field on Sunday.

As a result of the defeat, Ghetto dropped from joint fourth to sixth.

Golden Heroes, who were toppled from the top of the log last week, thrashed tailenders Young Aces 14-0 on Sunday to remain hot on United’s heels.

Real Madrid scored 12 goals without reply in their two matches. They beat Brazil United 9-0 and Eleven Experience 3-0. With maximum points from two matches, Real are now in fourth place, three points behind log- leaders Peace.

It was an excellent weekend for Mabayibone Strikers, who seem to be on the comeback trail.

They beat Experience – who were sixth, four places above them – 2-0 and Airport Valley United by the same margin.

Airport Valley had mixed fortunes, beating Manchester United 2-0 in their second match.

Manchester beat Walmer Hotspurs 2-1 in their second match.
