Opening win for Tigers

Bay teams take control in Westering’s 10th Co-Ed Sports Festival

NELSON Mandela Bay schools ruled the roost on the opening two days of the 10th Westering High School Co-Ed Festival at the weekend. In the rugby fixtures on Saturday, the four Western Cape schools on tour came close in two of the match-ups, but in the end it was the Bay schools which emerged triumphant, not only in those games, but also in the other three played on the day.

In the main match of the day, hosts Westering Tigers overcame a strong challenge from Milnerton to claim a well-deserved 2115 victory.

Westering were quick out the blocks and scored the first try through centre Sisanda Matlali. Flyhalf Baphelele Pango, who was superb on the day, converted.

Milnerton replied with a good try by No 8 Cameron Hort.

But it was Westering who would take a 14-5 lead into half time after an Aviwe Mama try and Pango conversion.

Pango was on the scoreboard again just after mid-way through the second half when he registered his team’s third and final try of the game after being the recipient of a quick tap and go. He converted his own try.

Milnerton bounced back with tries from flank Sethu Zoya and left wing Mervyn Nicholson but it was not enough to curb the home team’s march to victory.

In the main curtain-raiser, Despatch ran out 24-0 winners over Fairmont.

Left wing Heinrich Willemse (2), No 8 Lornelle Avontuur and lock Gary Kleyn scored tries for Despatch, while fylhalf Donze Landman kicked two conversions.

In earlier games, Framesby were too strong for Cambridge, winning 57-0, while Woodridge thumped Fish Hoek 83-10.

DF Malherbe did just enough to beat Bergvliet 20-19 and Andrew Rabie were convincing in a 41-10 win against Port Alfred.

In the first game, Alexander Road ran away 48-5 victors over East London’s Westbank. The festival continues today. Results from the three sporting codes on Friday and Saturday:
