Unusual take on Disney tale well worth it

- – Devon Koen

ROSE RED by Twist in the Tale Productions, directed by Pieter Bosch, written by and starring Dianne Simpson, playing at Vicky’s tomorrow at 8pm.

WICKEDLY entertaining and skillfully put together, this alternative version of the age-old tale of Snow White gives the audience a glimpse into the world of the evil queen.

This cabaret-style, one-woman show looks at what makes the evil queen, well evil, and evokes feelings of empathy towards her, while exploring her past and contemplating her downfall.

Rose Red is a touching rendition of the centuries old tale, only told with refreshing twists and plenty of witty bits.

What makes the production even more enjoyable is how Dianne Simpson, as the evil queen, cleverly jumps between characters while belting out contemporary hits such as Lady Gaga’s Poker Face.

Simpson’s style of rhetoric is engaging and well-paced, as she incorporates other hits by artists such as Coldplay, Tori Amos and Leonard Cohen.

What sets Rose Red apart from the Disney-esque version of Snow White is how different versions of the tale are included in the narrative including a quip about the original Brothers Grimm story, which saw the evil queen having to dance with red-hot iron shoes until she fell over, dead.

Simpson, as the sole performer and writer of the piece, must be commended for her insight and talent in telling a story not known.

The show is moving, unique and funny all at the same time.
