It’s Minion madness!

- Nomazima Nkosi nkosino@timesmedia.co.za

FANS of the Despicable Me franchise are in for a treat tomorrow as Gru, the character both children and adults have grown to love, will be at the Boardwalk from 10am. Not travelling by his lonesome, Gru will be accompanied by one of his Minions, Mel, and will take pictures with all the tiny bosses who are home for the school holidays, as well as any adult Despicable Me fans.

This comes after the national release of Despicable Me 3 at local cinemas on Friday.

Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures’ Despicable Me blockbuster introduced audiences to super villain Gru and his mischievous Minions. After becoming father to orphans Margo, Edith and Agnes, Gru gave up his life of crime and turned from “super bad” to “super dad”.

In Despicable Me 2, Gru was recruited by top agent Lucy to join the Anti-Villain League (AVL). Gru thought romance was out of his reach until he fell hard for his super spy partner, now wife, Lucy.

In Despicable Me 3, Gru, Lucy and the girls return for a globe-hopping adventure featuring new characters and some big surprises.

There is a new super villain on the scene whose exploits cause Lucy and Gru to lose their jobs. The Minions, desperate for a life of crime, decide to leave Gru and go off in search of a new Big Boss.

We also discover Gru has a twin brother, Dru – fantastically wealthy, charming and sophisticated – and with a head of fabulous golden hair.

Boardwalk public relations and promotions manager Siphokazi Ngombane said children were bound to enjoy the fun-filled activities at the Boardwalk by the entrance of the Second Avenue grass area.

“There’s going to be entertainment, spot prizes, balloon making, stick walkers, and we’ll also have a colouring competition with funky music pumping in the background,” Ngombane said.

All the activities are free and there will be a screening of Despicable Me 3 at 1pm. A charity of the Boardwalk’s choice will view the movie for free.

Three lucky Herald readers each stand a chance of winning a Despicable Me 3 hamper that includes frames and keyholder. To enter, SMS the word GRU to 41893, followed by your name and surname. The competition closes at noon tomorrow. Winners will be notified by day’s end. SMSes are R1.50 each. Errors and omissions are billed, and free SMSes don’t count.
