St Andrew’s taste success in UK tour

-

THE St Andrew’s College cricket team made a fine start to their tour of the United Kingdom, winning the first three matches before suffering a defeat.

In their opening match, they came up against Malvern College, a school headed by former St Andrew’s headmaster Anthony Clark.

The Andreans made a terrific start, with David Rushmere and Peter Jarvis setting up a solid platform. Rushmere was eventually out for 92 and Jarvis went on to make a majestic 150 as St Andrew’s amassed 320 in their allotted 50 overs.

Malvern responded well to get to 301, but Chris Norval took 5/53 to help the tourists win by 19 runs.

They batted well again in their next match against Sherborne School, scoring 238/4 in 40 overs. Captain Chris Benjamin made 88 and Murray Koster 70.

In response, Sherborne could only muster 136, with Chris Poole taking 4/22 and James Quarmby 3/11 as St Andrew’s won by 102 runs.

They then played another 40-over game, with Cheltenham College posting 190/8.

Jarvis and Benjamin were again in the runs with 64 and 79 not out respectively as St Andrew’s chased down the score for the loss of just two wickets.

After a rest day on Tuesday, the team took on Whitgift School last Wednesday and suffered their first defeat.

After being bowled out for just 118, the St Andrew’s attack fought hard, but they eventually went down by five wickets.
